One poignant and insightful quote

Here´s one quote I stumbled upon and found to be quite sad and insightful.

I want to share it in the form of a separate post so it won´t be lost in one of my usual 10 inspirational quotes entries.

I´m not entirely sure about the source though. Googeling has not allowed me to narrow it down further than to the tomb of an angelical bishop who was buried in Westminster Abbey in 1100 A.D:

When I was young and free and my imagination had no limits, I dreamed of changing the world.

As I grew older and wiser, I discovered the world would not change, so I shortened my sights somewhat and decided to change only my country. But it too seemed immovable.

As I grew into my twilight years, on one last desperate attempt, I settled for changing only my family, those closest to me, but alas, they would have none of it.

And now as I lay on my deathbed, I suddenly realize – if I had only changed myself first, then by example I might have changed my family. From their inspiration and encouragement I would then have been able to better my country and who knows, I may have changed the world.

  • Yeah, this has been said many times before, and it is so true.

  • Thanks for sharing this quote Henrik. In a grad school course I’m taking (Organizational Leadership), our professor recently asked how and where we begin to change our fear-based culture. I said we needed to start with ourselves because that is the only place/person where we have control (and not all the time at that). That’s one reason why I like this quote and am glad to add it to my quotes collection–it reminds us that change begins with us and flows like a ripple into the wider sea beyond our island of self. Peace.

  • therealdrag0 and Shonnie: Thanks for sharing. I totally agree and think this is one of the most important things to learn in life. And I like your thought about the ripple and the sea, Shonnie.

  • I love the quote! It’s so true! You can only control/ change yourself but in doing that you have to power to inspire and motivate the world! Thanks so much for sharing this! Have a great day!
