“I never knew an early-rising, hard-working, prudent man, careful of his earnings, and strictly honest who complained of bad luck.”
Henry Ward Beacher
“We must believe in luck. For how else can we explain the success of those we don’t like?”
Jean Cocteau
“Many an opportunity is lost because a man is out looking for four-leaf clovers.”
Unknown
Luck. Some hope for more of it. Some don’t believe in it. Some think that everyone but themselves are lucky.
But can you create more of your own good luck in life? Here are a few timeless thoughts on that topic.
1. Work hard. Be proactive.
“I’m a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work, the more luck I have.”
Thomas Jefferson
“To hell with circumstances; I create opportunities.”
Bruce Lee
This is in my experience very true. The more I work, the more I take chances and am proactive in life the more times I tend to be lucky.
Just sitting around and waiting for some good luck to land in your lap tends to be a pretty bad strategy. Creating your own opportunities and taking massive action simply gives you more of most things. Even luck.
Also, the more you practice the more you improve a deciding factor like your intuition. A better gut feeling can result in more decisions that may seem lucky from an outside perspective.
2. Be prepared.
“Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.”
Seneca
“One-half of life is luck; the other half is discipline – and that’s the important half, for without discipline you wouldn’t know what to do with luck.”
Carl Zuckmeyer
Now you that you have spotted an opportunity, what to do? Exactly. It’s a great idea to have an idea about how you can use an opportunity in a way benefits you. If you are unprepared then it’s easy to fumble away half of your lucky moments.
So, read. Talk about what you want with others that have more experience and knowledge than you. Ask them a lot of questions. Practice and educate yourself so that you are ready to make good and useful decisions when the opportunity arises.
3. Luck may often just be the golden rule.
“Your luck is how you treat people.”
Unknown
As you treat someone else s/he will feel like treating you. Maybe not today or tomorrow. But over time these things have a way of evening out.
So what looks like someone being lucky a lot from an outside perspective may just be s/he using the golden rule in a good way.
4. Being unlucky can be a sort of luck for you too.
“Luck never made a man wise.”
Seneca
“All of us have bad luck and good luck. The man who persists through the bad luck – who keeps right on going – is the man who is there when the good luck comes – and is ready to receive it.”
Robert Collier
“Each misfortune you encounter will carry in it the seed of tomorrow’s good luck.”
Og Mandino
Having some bad luck can in many ways be a good thing too.
When things are rough but you somehow get through them you tend to gain strength and perhaps a bit of wisdom and perspective on life. It may not have been fun. But those gains can be very helpful in the future.
I think that things do often balance out over time. You have bad meeting, date, day or even week. But, in my experience at least, then you often have something good happen or you get a lucky break the next day or week. Of course, in that situation it is important to be attentive and not still be focusing on that negative situation in the past.
The important thing is to keep going through ups and downs. The worst thing is when you just go passive and don’t do anything. Because then nothing seems to happen in a good long while.
I also find it useful to ask helpful questions when having a “negative situation”. Question like these:
- What is the good thing about this?
- What can I learn from this?
- What hidden opportunity can I find within this situation?
At first it might seem stupid to ask such a thing when having a bad day. But after a while you get used to it and your mind even starts to do it automatically from time to time.
Another important benefit of having some bad luck is what Robert Collier mentions above. When the good luck comes you are ready to recieve it.
You feel that after that bad luck you actually deserve your lucky break. This ties into hard work too. When you feel you have deserved your lucky break then you will have no or less problem with taking it.
There will be less self sabotage. There will be less situations where you start telling yourself that you can’t handle it or don’t deserve it.
You just go for it. And by having kept on going through the rough times you have gained strength and wisdom that will enable you to make the best out of this new and lucky situation.

I linking this onto my FB page…I’m sooo tired of hearing about how people are just not lucky…boo hoo…I think you’re list of quotes proves that we can control or “luck”…We have the power…
Thanks again for another perfectly timed post!!
“Luck is where preparedness meets opportunity”
” The harder i work the luckier i seem to get”
Hark work = Luck= Opportunities= Success
Working hard each day , allows you to become luckier and luckier and luckier.
As the author of How to Create Your Own Luck (Wiley), I found the points and quotes to be well-taken. The “lucky” people in my book had 8 Counterintuitive Traits in common in addition to the obvious. One of them that we should take to heart: They said “YES” when they wanted to say “no”. And that opened doors to options and opportunities they had not imagined. All of them didn’t just think positively, they took action and DID positively.
Luck is doing its part, we have to do our part.
I try to get so absorbed improving my own self and concentrating on the present that no time is left to think of luck. I think by doing this I am improving luck for the future.
Love this post. Awesome use of quotes and the one by Og Mandino is one of my favorites…. Its funny how we make our own luck, I was told it as a child but never really believed it until recently, All the “lucky” people around seem to work hard and give themselves away, as they say what goes around comes around.
Absolutely wonderful advice. I believe in luck to some extent, but I really do believe that working hard has a LOT to do with it. You can make your own luck and these are great ways to go about it!
Thanks!
I have experienced a lot of bad luck lately, but I’ve done my best to keep my head and sprits high. Ano in my life I’ve had some setbacks lately, but it is this diffucult time that has given me my strength. And with this strength has given me the energy to make positve chnages in my life. In just a few weeks I am seeing the results. Ano some good luck is on it’s way, I can feel it.
I certainly feel like I’ve deserved it
People often mix up LUCK like winning the lottery (to be chosen for a fortunate occasion randomly from a rather large sample) with LUCK like achieving great success and happiness through working hard and developing yourself. It shouldn’t even be called luck
Thanks Henrik
I believe we create our own luck through the choices we make and the actions we take.
Your life in this present moment is not the result of what was done to you, but rather a direct result of how you made your decisions with respect to your life, which includes how you have reacted to specific life events and circumstances.
The best way to create your luck is to follow your bliss and do what excites you. When you are in the flow…more luck seems to come to you.
Thanks for the post
i like it.
i like positivity blog.
Luck is real. But so is making the dice roll. If you don’t participate, how then can you know if you are going to win or lose?
I’m an absolute believer in the mantra that we create our own luck. Life doesn’t necessarily always bring us what we want, but we can always choose to make the best out of what we’re handed.
In my view, “luck” is just how we handle the cards we’re dealt.
Truly opened up my eyes to seeing luck from a different point of view.
Great post
You know, personally, I’m of the opinion that the harder you work, the luckier you get! But then, I also believe that we should walk through life seeking and embracing new opportunities… Just sayin’…
Thanks for this post about luck — it’s one of my favorite topics!
I also believe that you’re as lucky as you think you are, and the luckier you think you are…the luckier you are. Even when bad things happy, people who think they’re lucky see it as “I’m so lucky THAT didn’t happen” (thinking of something even worse than what actually happened).
I’m so lucky I found your blog!
Laurie
I love the positive spin on ‘bad luck”. In my view, no experience is ever wasted if I can learn something from it.
And Susan – the power of saying “Yes” should not be underestimated. I’ve had tremendous (ahem) luck saying yes to opportunities – especially the ones that scared me a little!
For me, luck is our own perception. When bad things happen, we say it is bad luck. When good things happen, we say it is good luck. So, say that we want to have good things happen in our life, being proactive is indeed going to get us there.
All four tips here must be refined from many books and experiences i think
. I agree that we should prepare for the opportunity, work more to have chances to catch it but the most important tip is the #4.
Everything happened to you has its own lesson to teach you, and the great man will learn it, be better and go through.
Well, I believe luck does exist in our lives to a certain extent. And right here, I’m referring to both good and bad luck. Luck is a trivial but a crucial and magical force to be reckoned with in anything and everything we do.
I’m sure there are times that things just won’t go your way or turn out the way you want it to be in spite of all your sweat and hardwork. Luck does play its part.
This post was really interesting – thanks so much for sharing!
That sparkels my mind…Its not luck…Its my deeds!
Let dozens of folks with basically the same skills start a similar business and some of them will fail while others will succeed. So luck does indeed exist. Without it, there wouldn’t be a universe.
I recommend you to take a FREE “good luck trip” at my website, http://www.goodlucktrips.com
It really works (but you must believe in it)
Good Luck!
Steve
