I've been trying to unlearn pessimism for about a year now..it's pretty hard, but also very creative and challenging in the way you try to see the light even in what could be the worst situation. @shanel yang: I LOVE the last part of ur comment, about sprouting ur optimism in ur diary, then planting it around optimistic friends :-D Thats what I've been trying to do..and yeah, though I do get down in the dumps lots of times, I have been changing over the past months..and I think optimism ROCKS!

I've been trying to ignore my darn pessimism for quite a while now. Great post. Only thing is, if I were to try that rubber band idea, people would wonder why every time they look at me they see the rubber band on a different wrist haha

I subscribe to this blog a few months ago and have been very impressed with the developed thoughts you provoke. I have used some of you post as inspiration on my own blog.

The ways in which we develop our own reality is a interesting topic that diverts to the time we where born and who we were influence by.

However, I see in some optimist that they become too oblivious to the present situation. If you can over come this blindside then the benefits of optimism is enormous.

I always felt OK being a pessimist until another even worse pessimist showed up. I realized being a pessimist can be very annoying.

This post will be a very good reminder for myself. If I was wearing the rubber band on my left-hand wrist today, it should be hanging on my right-hand wrist now.

This is such a great article. I started to read it earlier in the day when I was busy with work but decided to hold off until I could give it my full attention, and it was well deserved. I am also an optimist. So much so that when I accidentally dropped my keys down the gutter, I was laughing about it. The friends I was with were amazed by my good natured response to what could have been a stressful event. My attitude has definitely rubbed off on them, and I love to see others portray this kind of open outlook on the world as well. Thanks for the great post!

The funny thing about picking a new reality if you've been born into a family that is die-hard pessimistic is that it doesn't feel authentic for a very long time. You can't help but feel phony or as if you are trying to be something that maybe you weren't meant to be. My mother used to accuse me all the time, from my earliest memories, "You think you're better than us?! Well, I've not news for you: You're not!" That's the kind of knock-you-down reaction that beginner optimists can expect from their family and friends.

Unless you are ready to leave them, it's a dilemma. But, even when you do free yourself from them, most of the world seems to hate optimists. Just try to say, "Everything will work out for the best" to a small group of people and not be accused of being a Pollyanna, as if that's a bad thing.

Having said all that, I did become an optimist. I'm just saying it wasn't easy. To anyone who has to live with pessimists for now, I strongly recommend keeping a diary and sprouting your optimism in there. Then, when you feel strong enough, transfer it onto some fertile soil around some new optimistic friends.

Great post, and best of luck to all future optimists!
