Some have it. Some don’t.
Some use rabbits-paws or four-leaf clovers hoping to get it.
Some don´t believe in it.
Here are some of my thoughts on what you can do to create you own good luck and make the best out of it.
Think about what you want. Not what you don´t want – This is key. Whatever you focus your mind on you´ll find proof of and possibilities to get more of. If you focus on having no money, then your mind will find negative newspaper articles on personal finance and opinions filled with apathy.
If you focus on increasing your income then your mind will suddenly start noticing positive articles and books on how to get out of debt and making more money. At the water cooler at work your mind will pick up on what Lisa says about cheap airline tickets and frugal but great vacations instead of hearing Al complaining about his mortgage.
Focus on what you want, instead of what you don´t want, and opportunities will start to pop out of all the stimuli that is your world.
Some practical ways to refocus your mind: Each morning, take out a piece of paper and write down, in present tense, what your goals are. For instance: “I make 4000 dollars a month”. Then write the same thing the next day.
Or you can say it out loud 10 times every morning. If you do that, be sure to say it with emotion or it won´t stick in your mind.
Over time, using these two variations of affirmations, you refocus your mind to pick out the opportunities that will enable you to make more money.
Another way is to rebuild your environment a bit. Instead of subscribing to magazines about buying stuff, which only fuels your credit–debt to rise even higher, cancel those subscriptions. And instead subscribe to free blogs about making sound financial decisions like Get Rich Slowly and I Will Teach You to Be Rich.
This positive environment-change will not only make you feel better and in more control of your life. It will also provide you with opportunities that you may not have noticed or not even had access to before. You can read more about focusing on what you want in Focus on What You Want, Not What You Don’t Want.
Be proactive – Don´t wait for opportunities to fall into your lap. Do research online or at the library. The solutions and opportunities you need are most likely out there right now. They might fall into your lap some time in the future. But you if you are proactive then you can find some of them today. Don´t waste you time.
Be open and attentive to possibilities – Possibilities may not always jump up into your face. They might be where you are right now. Or they might be a little bit further away, pehaps a bit to your left or to your right. But you have to be open to them and the possibility that they might not look exactly like you have imagined. Don´t walk around like a zombie just watching your feet. And don´t be too focused on a solution that will look exactly as you imagined it. Look up, wake up, open up and take notice of the opportunities in your life. There are often more of them than we might think.
Be positive – By keeping a positive attitude most people will react to you in a similar manner. The world is often a mirror of ourselves. When you keep a positive attitude towards other people they will be more positive towards you and offer you far more opportunities and help than if you keep a negative attitude. Be prepared – Now you that you´ve spotted an opportunity, what to do? Exactly. It’s a great idea to have an idea about how you can use an opportunity in a way that it benefits you.
Read. Talk about what you want with others that have more experience and knowledge than you. Ask them a lot of questions (and don´t be afraid of asking the stupid ones). Educate yourself so that you are ready to make good and useful decisions when the opportunity arises.
Take action over and over again – Obvious, eh? Well, still it´s very common just to gather information about something or having an opportunity just in front of you and doing nothing about it. We’ve all done that.
Try to figure out what is holding you back. If it is fear – which I believe it pretty often is – then you may want to check out 5 Life-Changing Keys to Overcoming Your Fear. If it´s something else, then try to find some information about your problem and practical solutions. Google is your friend.
Taking action over and over creates more and more possibilities for positive coincidences and possibilities. It also increases your experience and makes you better and better prepared for each time that you find a possibility.
Following these steps has created more opportunities and chance coincidences – what I would see as luck – in my life. And, over time, as I hone these skills I believe I will create more and more of that.
I hope you´ll have the same experience too.
