Video: Trust me on the sunscreen

by Henrik Edberg. Print Print

I don´t know if you remember this but back in 1999 director Baz Luhrman (the guy that made Moulin Rouge and the Claire Danes-version of Romeo & Juliet) made a popular spoken word-song called Everybody´s free (to wear sunscreen).

They played it over and over on the radio and on MTV for what must have been months. I even bought and still have the now dust-covered single somewhere in my bookcase.

A couple of days ago I stumbled upon the video again and found it to not be a piece of overhyped nostalgia but actually still kinda awesome in it´s own insightful way. You can watch it at this YouTube page. The video is 5 minutes long.

Yeah, it’s an excellent and beautiful video indeed. I could watch it over and over again :)

Just found your wonderful blog.

Thought I would leave a note that the “lyrics” for this song is usually attributed to Kurt Vonnegut as a commencement address at MIT.

It actually was written in a newspaper column in Chicago in the early 80’s by a female writer. Can’t remember her name at this time.

It still has been a favourite of mine for almost 20 years though.

Thanks for your kind words and the info, Curtis. I kinda thought Luhrman had written the lyrics for the song and that it was just a couple of years old, not two decades…
